The First Visits Shape Every Visit After

Adults who avoid the dentist almost always trace it back to something that happened when they were young. That is why we run children’s appointments differently — building comfort is the clinical priority, because a child who is comfortable will keep coming.

Why Children’s Dental Care Matters

There is a persistent belief that decay in baby teeth does not matter because they fall out anyway. It does matter. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth developing beneath them, and losing them early leads to crowding later. Decay in a baby tooth can also become infected and painful, and infection at the root can affect the adult tooth forming underneath.

Regular visits also let us monitor development, track how the adult teeth are coming through, and catch problems while they are small. Most childhood decay occurs in the grooves of newly erupted adult molars, which is exactly what fissure sealants are designed to prevent.

Who Should We See, and When?

Children benefit from starting early, well before there is a problem to fix.

We Recommend an Appointment If:
  • Your child is approaching their first birthday, or the first tooth has appeared
  • It has been six months or more since their last visit
  • Adult molars have recently come through and could be sealed
  • Your child plays contact or ball sports and needs a mouthguard
  • You have noticed discolouration, a chip or a complaint of pain
  • Your child is anxious and would benefit from an unhurried introduction

An Appointment Built Around the Child

The pace matters more than the checklist. Nothing about a first visit needs rushing.

1. Getting Comfortable

We let children look around, sit in the chair and hold the mirror before anything happens. A first appointment is often mostly familiarity — a look, a count of the teeth, and a conversation with you.

2. Examination

We check the teeth, gums and how development is progressing, explaining each instrument before using it.

3. Clean and Fluoride

A gentle clean and professionally applied fluoride, which strengthens enamel and can help reverse very early decay before a filling becomes necessary.

4. Fissure Sealants

The grooves on newly erupted adult molars are too narrow for a toothbrush bristle. A sealant flows in and sets, closing them off. Quick, no anaesthetic, and one of the most effective preventive measures available.

5. Monitoring Development

We watch for crowding, bite development and habits such as thumb sucking, and advise when an orthodontic assessment would be worthwhile — often the answer is to monitor rather than intervene.

6. Guidance for Parents

Practical advice on brushing, diet, bottles and sports mouthguards, specific to your child rather than generic.

Risks and Recovery

Children’s dental treatment is low risk, but there are practical considerations worth knowing.

Possible Risks:

  • A young or anxious child may not tolerate treatment at a first attempt
  • Very early decay may need monitoring rather than immediate treatment
  • Some treatment may require referral to a paediatric specialist
  • Dental trauma can affect the developing adult tooth beneath
  • X-rays involve very low doses of radiation, taken only when clinically indicated

Recovery and Aftercare:

  • Most preventive treatment has no recovery period at all
  • After a filling, watch that your child does not chew the numb lip or cheek
  • Sealants require no aftercare beyond normal brushing
  • Following dental trauma, follow-up over several months is important

Children’s Dental Fees

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule provides eligible children with a capped benefit for basic dental services over a two-year period. We can check eligibility on your behalf.

For children who are not eligible, our standard fees apply: new patient consultation and clean from $219, fissure seals $50 to $100 per tooth, and tooth-coloured fillings $209 to $450. Custom sports mouthguards are quoted at consultation.

This price guide is an estimate only and not a final quote. All quotes are valid for 6 months and subject to change after that period.

FAQs About Children’s Dentistry in Canberra

Around their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears. The visit is mostly about familiarity and a conversation with you about brushing, bottles and diet.

Book a morning slot when they are fresh. Avoid words like hurt, needle or drill even reassuringly, since they introduce ideas that were not there.

Bringing your child along to your own check-up beforehand often helps enormously.

It provides eligible children with a capped benefit for basic dental services over a two-year period, funded through Medicare.

We can check your child’s eligibility for you and explain what it does and does not cover.

Tell us when you book so we can allow extra time. We will let them explore the room and the chair before anything happens.

We will not force treatment on a child who is not ready. Sometimes the most productive first appointment achieves nothing clinically and everything in terms of trust.
