A Pathway to Funding Your Dental Care

For patients requiring extensive dental treatment—such as dental implants, full-arch restorations, or major reconstructive work—the compassionate release of superannuation can be a practical funding option.

To help ensure this process is managed smoothly, ethically, and in accordance with regulatory requirements, Civic Gentle Dental Care works with specialised medical release facilitators, such as Access My Super and SuperCare.

Our clinical role is to conduct a thorough examination and provide an itemised treatment plan and medical documentation; the facilitation service manages the paperwork and lodging with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on your behalf.

What Is Compassionate Release of Superannuation?

The Australian Government allows eligible individuals to apply for the early release of superannuation funds on compassionate grounds to help pay for necessary medical and dental procedures that are not readily available through the public health system.

This pathway is intended for individuals who do not have other reasonable means to fund treatments needed to treat life-threatening conditions, alleviate acute or chronic pain, or manage severe oral dysfunction.

Please Note: Approval is determined strictly by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and your individual super fund, not by our dental clinic. Our role is to provide the clinical assessment, diagnosis, itemised quote, and supporting dental reports required for your formal application.

Who May Be Eligible to Apply?

This pathway is typically available to individuals facing significant out-of-pocket costs for essential, major dental work who are unable to cover the treatment through other financial avenues. The ATO assesses every application individually against strict medical and financial guidelines.

This Pathway May Be an Option for Patients Requiring:

Dental Implants & All-on-4 / All-on-X: Single, multiple, or full-arch tooth replacement solutions.

Extensive Crown & Bridge Restorations: Rebuilding severely worn, damaged, or failing dentition.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery: Complex surgical extractions, bone grafting, or wisdom tooth procedures.

Chronic Pain Relief: Procedures required to address persistent dental infections, advanced periodontal disease, or severe TMJ dysfunctions.

Treatment of Family Members: Under ATO compassionate rules, superannuation can often be accessed to cover eligible treatments for a spouse, partner, or dependent children.

The Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

To keep the application as clear and stress-free as possible, we partner with experienced facilitation services to assist you from start to finish:

1. Your Consultation at Civic Gentle Dental Care

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation at our Canberra CBD practice. We complete all necessary diagnostics (digital scans, radiographs, and clinical examinations) and provide you with an itemised treatment plan and formal cost estimate.

2. Referral to Access My Super

With your consent, our team connects you directly with the specialists at Access My Super (or your chosen facilitator), who take over the coordination and administration of your claim.

3. Application Management & Medical Reports

The facilitator works closely with you to collate all required documentation, including our dental report and the necessary supporting medical report from your General Practitioner (GP) or specialist, before submitting the claim through myGov/ATO.

4. ATO Approval & Fund Release

Once the ATO reviews and approves the application, the determination is sent to your superannuation fund. Your super fund then releases the approved amount directly to your designated bank account so your dental treatment can begin promptly.

FAQs About Accessing Superannuation

No. Civic Gentle Dental Care cannot approve or guarantee the release of superannuation funds. The ATO is the sole assessing and decision-making authority under Australian law. Our responsibility is to supply the clinical diagnoses, treatment plan, and itemised paperwork required by the ATO and your super fund.

The full timeline generally spans 2 to 4 weeks once all documentation is submitted. The ATO typically takes up to 14 business days to process and issue a decision. Following approval, individual superannuation funds usually require an additional 5 to 10 business days to release the funds. Because timing depends on both government and fund processing, we recommend starting the paperwork as early as possible.

Civic Gentle Dental Care charges only for the clinical consultation, diagnostics, and dental treatment provided. Third-party facilitation services (such as Access My Super) may charge an administrative fee for managing your ATO application; this fee can often be included within the total sum released from your superannuation fund. We advise speaking with your facilitator and an independent financial adviser or accountant regarding any tax implications associated with early super release.
