A Fixed Arch, Not a Removable Plate

All-on-X replaces a full arch of teeth with a fixed bridge supported by a small number of implants — typically four to six. The distinction from a denture matters: nothing is removed for cleaning, nothing moves while eating, and the load is carried by the jawbone rather than resting on the gum.

What Is All-on-X?

All-on-X is a full-arch implant technique in which a small number of implants are placed strategically in the jaw to support a complete fixed bridge. The rear implants are often angled to make use of available bone, which can reduce or avoid the need for grafting in the back of the jaw.

It is used where an entire arch of teeth is missing, or where the remaining teeth are beyond saving. Because the bridge is fixed to the implants, it is cleaned in the mouth rather than taken out, and it does not cover the palate the way a full upper denture does.

Who Is All-on-X For?

This is significant treatment and suitability requires careful assessment, both clinically and in terms of what the patient wants from it.

All-on-X May Be Considered If:
  • You are missing all or most teeth in one or both arches
  • Your remaining teeth are not restorable
  • You wear a full or partial denture that is loose or uncomfortable
  • You want a fixed rather than removable solution
  • You have sufficient bone, or bone that can be worked with using angled placement
  • Your general health supports a surgical procedure of this scale

A Staged Surgical Process

This treatment is planned in considerable detail before any surgery, and involves a healing period before the final bridge is made.

1. Comprehensive Assessment and CT Imaging

A cone beam CT scan and full clinical assessment establish bone volume, anatomy and the position of nerves and sinuses. Medical history is reviewed carefully given the scale of the procedure.

2. Digital Planning

Implant positions and angles are planned digitally against the available bone and the proposed tooth positions.

3. Surgery and Implant Placement

Any remaining unrestorable teeth are removed and the implants placed. Sedation options are discussed beforehand.

4. Provisional Bridge

A provisional fixed bridge is fitted so you leave with teeth. This is not the final restoration and is not intended to carry full chewing load.

5. Healing and Integration

The implants integrate over several months. Diet is restricted during this period and reviewed regularly.

6. Final Bridge and Ongoing Maintenance

Once integration is confirmed, the definitive bridge is made and fitted. Ongoing professional maintenance is essential and continues indefinitely.

Risks and Recovery

This is major dental surgery. The risks are correspondingly more significant than for a single implant and require careful consideration.

Possible Risks:

  • Significant swelling, bruising and discomfort in the first week
  • Infection at surgical sites
  • Failure of one or more implants to integrate
  • Nerve or sinus involvement depending on anatomy
  • Peri-implantitis affecting the supporting bone over time
  • Mechanical complications including fracture of the bridge or components
  • Substantially reduced success rates in smokers
  • Speech and eating adaptation during the provisional phase

Recovery and Aftercare:

  • Swelling peaks in the first few days and settles over one to two weeks
  • Soft diet through the integration period, with specific guidance provided
  • Cleaning under the bridge requires particular technique and tools
  • Professional maintenance is required at regular intervals indefinitely
  • The bridge will require servicing and eventual replacement

FAQs About All-Teeth-On-Implants in Canberra

In most cases a provisional fixed bridge is fitted at the surgical appointment, so you do not leave without teeth. It is provisional rather than final, and diet is restricted while the implants integrate.

The definitive bridge is made once integration is confirmed, typically several months later.

The bridge is fixed rather than removable, does not move while eating, and an upper bridge does not cover the palate, so taste and temperature are unaffected. Chewing efficiency is substantially better.

Against that, it is considerably more expensive, involves surgery, and demands more of you in daily cleaning and ongoing professional maintenance.

The implants themselves can last many years with good maintenance. The bridge attached to them is a mechanical component that wears and will require servicing and eventual replacement.

Anyone presenting this as a permanent, one-off solution is overstating it. Ongoing cost should be part of your decision.

No. Suitability depends on bone, general health, smoking status and your capacity to maintain the cleaning it requires. Some patients are better served by other options.

Where the case is complex or falls outside what we provide, we will refer you to a specialist rather than proceed.
