Root Canal Cost in Canberra: Front Teeth, Premolars and Molars

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being expensive and uncomfortable, but much of the worry comes from not knowing what to expect. The cost mostly depends on which tooth needs treatment, because back teeth have more roots and canals to clean and fill. Here’s how the fees work at Civic Gentle Dental Care in Canberra City.

Root canal fees by tooth

  • Front teeth (anterior): $1,200 to $1,300
  • Premolars: $1,500 to $1,600
  • Molars: $1,800 to $2,000

These fees cover the root canal treatment itself. They don’t include the final filling or crown that protects the tooth afterwards. Your dentist will give you a written quote before treatment starts.

Why back teeth cost more

A front tooth usually has one canal. Premolars often have one or two, and molars commonly have three or four, sometimes curved or narrow. More canals take more time to find, clean, shape and fill, so the fee is higher.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often weakened and may crack under chewing forces, so your dentist may recommend a crown. Porcelain crowns start from $1,800. A front tooth with little damage may only need a filling. Your dentist will explain the options for your tooth.

How many visits?

Treatment is often done over one to three appointments, depending on the tooth and whether there is infection. The first visit focuses on relieving pain and cleaning out the infected or inflamed pulp.

Root canal or an endodontist?

Most root canal treatment is done by general dentists. If a tooth is complex, such as one with curved or blocked canals or a previous root canal that needs redoing, your dentist may recommend referral to an endodontist, a registered specialist in root canal treatment.

Claiming on your health fund

Many extras policies include a benefit for root canal treatment, often under major dental, with waiting periods and annual limits. We claim on the spot with HICAPS, and we are an NIB First Choice and Westfund Provider of Choice practice. Ask your fund what you are covered for, and we can give you the item numbers from your treatment plan. See our health fund page.

If you’re in pain now

Toothache, swelling or sensitivity that lingers can mean the nerve is inflamed or infected. An emergency exam is $70 to $110, plus x-rays at $52 each as needed. Call (02) 6247 0224 or see our emergency dentist page. If you have facial swelling with fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department.

All dental treatment carries risks, and your dentist will discuss them with you. Read more about root canal therapy in Canberra or book online.
